Ingredients

Scale

For the Fried Tofu

  • 400g firm tofu, cut into cubes or rectangular pieces
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • Cooking oil for frying

For the Peanut Sauce

  • 1/2 cup roasted peanuts
  • 1/2 cup coconut milk
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon palm sugar or brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon tamarind paste (or 1 teaspoon lime juice as a substitute)
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 red chili, finely chopped (adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 cup water (adjust for desired sauce consistency)

For Garnish and Serving

  • 1 cup bean sprouts, blanched
  • 1 cucumber, julienned
  • 1 carrot, julienned
  • Fresh cilantro leaves (optional)
  • Lime wedges (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Tofu
    • Pat the tofu dry with a paper towel to remove excess moisture.
    • In a bowl, mix cornstarch, salt, and garlic powder (if using). Toss the tofu pieces in the mixture to coat evenly.
  2. Fry the Tofu
    • Heat cooking oil in a deep pan or wok over medium-high heat.
    • Fry the tofu pieces until golden brown and crispy on all sides, about 4–6 minutes.
    • Remove the tofu from the oil and place it on a paper towel to drain excess oil.
  3. Make the Peanut Sauce
    • In a blender or food processor, blend roasted peanuts until they form a coarse paste.
    • In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the peanut paste, coconut milk, soy sauce, sugar, tamarind paste, garlic, chili, and water.
    • Cook the sauce, stirring continuously, for 5–7 minutes until it thickens to your desired consistency. Adjust seasoning to taste.
  4. Assemble and Serve
    • Arrange the fried tofu on a serving plate.
    • Drizzle the peanut sauce generously over the tofu.
    • Garnish with bean sprouts, julienned cucumber and carrot, and fresh cilantro.
    • Serve immediately with lime wedges on the side for added tang.

Notes

  • Adjust the chili to control the heat level of the peanut sauce.
  • Use pre-made peanut butter for a quicker version of the sauce, but ensure it’s unsweetened for the best flavor.
  • Air-fry the tofu for a healthier alternative.
